Some girls dream of being princesses, but a 7-year-old in Nevada got an even higher honor, queen— homecoming queen, that is.
On Friday night, Haylie Chemela was named homecoming queen of Fernley High School reported the Reno Gazette-Journal. Chemela has an inoperable brain tumor that doctors found on August 15. They’re unable to operate on it because the tumor is in her brain stem and is intertwined in her healthy brain tissue. Surgery would risk severe damage or death.
According to Chemela’s mother, Maria, doctors will not biopsy the tumor because of these risks. The only available treatment is radiation, which she is now undergoing.
Thanks to a family friend, Haylie was made a homecoming princess and invited to participate in the school’s homecoming activities. She even got her own varsity cheerleader’s uniform.
“They were really nice to me,” Haylie told the Reno Gazette-Journal.
At her “coronation,” Haylie was escorted in front of the crowd and performed with the cheerleaders during the second half.
“We’re overwhelmed,” Maria Chmela told the Reno Gazette-Journal. “These are things we may never get to experience with her, with her diagnosis.”
