After a two-month battle with a rare pregnancy-related cancer, 26-year-old Jenna Hinman died Monday, according to the Facebook page Prayers for Jenna.
Just a few months ago, Hinman had been pregnant with twins and was living at Fort Drum military base in New York with her husband, U.S. Army Sgt. Brandon Hinman. But 30 weeks into her pregnancy, she suddenly started experiencing trouble breathing and was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent an emergency cesarean section, according to CNYCentral.com.
Shortly after the birth of her twin daughters, Kinleigh and Azlynn, Hinman began coughing up blood and was placed in a medically induced coma. It was then that doctors discovered Hinman was suffering from choriocarcinoma – a cancer that develops in a woman’s uterus during pregnancy.
Hinman remained in a coma and on life support for two months at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, New York, while simultaneously receiving chemotherapy to treat her condition, Syracuse.com reported. Though her cancer count had slowly been decreasing, she developed pneumonia on Sunday.
On Monday, Jenna’s friends posted the following message on her Facebook page:
“To Jenna’s many devoted followers, today our hearts are broken. We are devastated to inform you that Jenna has suddenly passed away after a courageous two month fight against cancer.”
Jenna’s twins, born prematurely, were released from their six-week stay in the intensive care unit on April 17th and have been staying with Jenna’s parents.
Though military health insurance will cover the costs of Jenna’s care, a page has been created on the fundraising site GoFundMe.com to offset the family’s future expenses.
